Relationship Status: Single

Single, but not by choice I suppose. If I could use the Facebook relationship status settings, I’d say “It’s complicated”…

Being in your late twenties and being single is not easy. The reason? I am bombarded on social media with engagement shoots, wedding dresses, honeymoon snapshots and sonograms. Not that I want any of those things. I can’t imagine walking down an isle, saying I do, or spending hundreds of rands on a wedding. I would, however, not mind having someone to go on adventures with, wake up next to, and plan some kind of future with.

And to some extent, I have such a person. He is the person I care about most, or at least on par with my family. We spend weekends together, weeknights together, and by Sunday I know when I will see him again. He is my happy place and my calm place, and makes me feel less lonely. I can be silly with him and I can be raw with him. He might read this one day, he might not. But there is a companionship between us that I’ve never experienced before in past relationships.

Like I said, I’m not single by choice.
